ecom Instruments, the global ATEX equipment manufacturer, is relocating its UK operation to The Wilton Centre. The company has moved from Chesterfield because it wishes to be at the heart of the region's oil and gas, pharmaceutical and petrochemical sectors.

The company is also keen to develop its relationships with potential customers through membership of bodies including the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC), which is based in the Centre, and NOF Energy.

ecom manufactures and supplies specialist technical equipment which has been designed and certified to be used in hazardous areas. These include mobile communication devices, handheld computers, measuring and calibration equipment and portable lighting.

The UK operation is part of a global network of ecom subsidiaries in Europe, The United States, Asia and the Middle East. Initially, the company will be taking on a local person to run its operation in The Wilton Centre and has plans to recruit further employees.

Carl Henderson, ecom’s Northern UK Sales Manager, said: "Teesside is the ideal location for our business and our development plans. In addition to the thriving oil and gas sector supply chain operating in the region, more than a third of the UK pharmaceutical industry is located in the North East, as is over half of the petrochemical industry.

"The Wilton Centre is the perfect base for us because it is so well placed - and having NEPIC just down the corridor is important."

Joanne Leng, Director of Business Development at NOF Energy, said: "The North East, and Teesside in particular, is still an attractive proposition for companies like ecom that want to further establish themselves within the industry sectors that operate out of the region."
