Getting over the message that life is a risky business

July 2008

DuPont Teijin Films and Cleveland Police

DuPont Teijin Films at Wilton, which has marked 13 years without a recordable injury, held a safety day at The Wilton Centre.

The event featured a series of presentations, including those given by figures from the local community.

They included Inspector Eric Robinson, Head of Road Policing at Cleveland Police, who is responsible for a team of officers that police the area’s road network.

His key focus is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries that occur on Cleveland’s roads each year and he gave a presentation on the importance of wearing seatbelts, the implications of drink driving, excessive speed, use of mobile phones and a recap on general road safety practices.

A number of hard-hitting images of the results of poor driving were used to show the long lasting effects on people’s lives.

Another presentation was given by Mike Hall, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Road Safety Manager, who leads a team aimed at improving the safety of the council’s road users.

His presentation highlighted some of the region’s bad driving locations and echoed points made by Inspector Robinson.

A further presentation was given by Robert Black, DuPont Leveraged Safety Resource, who provides a service to DuPont businesses to help them improve and maintain their safety performance.

His presentation looked at the risks workers face, not only during work hours but also at home. With Robert’s help, each member of the team developed a personal safety improvement plan to work on over the next year.

John Purdy, Site Manager for DuPont Teijin Films, said: “Safety must always be our number one concern and events such as this serve to raise the whole community’s awareness. We will certainly be making this an annual event.”
