£1.2m for carbon abatement project

June 2011

AlgaeCAT Algae Carbon Abatement Technology

North East energy and process firms have received £1.2M towards the algae based, carbon abatement technology project, AlgaeCAT.

The funding, provided by the Technology Strategy Board’s Collaborative Reseach and Development Award, was secured with the help of Enterprise Europe Network North East, an initiative managed by project leaders, The Centre for Process Innovation.

AlgaeCAT aims to develop a low-cost, algae-based carbon abatement system for the the capture of industrial scale CO2 emissions. It unites process industry and energy generators from the region, including Alcan Aluminium UK, Sembcorp Utilities UK, Cemex UK, Steetley Dolomite, Tata Steel and Ove Arup & Partners.

Project Manager, Chris Gilbert from CPI, said “This grant has united key players in North East industry in a bid to reduce carbon emissions. The successful development of a novel, high performance photobioreactor system, that can overcome these challenges, will allow these industries to significantly reduce the amount of CO2 they release into the atmosphere.”

“By pioneering commercially viable algae carbon abatement technologies, North East Industry is leading the way for a global reduction in industrial carbon emmissions.”

* The CPI was invited to speak at the Conference on the Competitiveness of the European Chemicals Industry, Brussels, run by the Directorate General Enterprise and Industry of the European Commission.

Dr Alan McClelland of the Innovation Accelerator team – a project managed by CPI – told more than 150 delegates about the organisation’s work.

He said: “It is an important boost to North East England that CPI is receiving increasing recognition for its role in stimulating business growth in the chemical sector.”
